It’s been a while since I’ve introduced a new product relating to communications and VOIP.  Most folks know by now that “VOIP” stands for “voice over internet protocol”.  It has been around for years now, but is beginning to come into it’s own and become more usable, and thus viable, as a low-cost way to communicate over phone lines using your computer.

Before I get into the meat of the topic, i.e., wireless technology and communications, I want to cut to the chase and suggest that you consider your budget and communications needs and consider using this new product, called the “MagicJack“ to cut your phone bill down to $20 a year or so.  You must have a computer that meets the requirements, but that’s about it.

What MagicJack does is simplify the whole VOIP process, and it provides additional advantages of convenience.  You take it with you wherever you go as it plugs into a USB port in your computer/laptop and can work in conjunction with your Wireless N (or Wireless G — the “N” protocol being the faster of the two) adapter to provide phone service through your computer anywhere you can pick up a signal.

Also, I want to mention that there is a new WiFi MAX technology on the horizon that will expand the wireless range from the broadcast source out to around 3 miles!  What that means is that generic wireless coverage could be available almost everywhere there is even a semi-populated area.  It’s not complete, but even cell service isn’t complete yet.  It’s a matter of degree.  Just do a search for “wifi hotspots” in your area and you will be very surprised I’m sure.

I myself have tried the VOIP service from VOIP.com and was not overwhelmed with the call quality.  Namely, I could hear the calls clearly, but those on the other end of my call listening many times got a terrible echo making it impossible to continue the call.  Even when I was on with customer support it did it to the tech support agent as well.

The customer service was polite but provided or offered no solutions that worked.  It was not on my end, we pinged and checked everything and the throughput and all other categories were green lights.  I’m not sure if they are overselling their available bandwidth and simply cannot say that, or if there is some other technical issue they don’t know or aren’t talking about.  Either way, I endured for about 6 months then shut it off.  I have been researching alternative services.  They are quite similar, but the VIOP.com monthly fees were about $5 cheaper so I went for it, without any reason to pay extra.

It may well be that you get what you pay for here between the “conventional” VOIP services.  Well, things are changing and the hardware developers are beginning to respond to the rapidly expanding communications market, which is seeking to integrate the various communications technologies, making them cheaper and more robust, more powerful and simple to use.

The changes being effected now in the WiFi industry, namely the newer 802.11 draft “N” wireless protocol, expands the usable broadcast range by 5 times or more.  Further, the speed has increase to 300Mbps which means much more bandwidth for streaming video/audio, fast data transmission and far less dropped signals (as the new Wireless N protocol utilizes “MIMO”, or multiple-in, multiple-out antenna technology which has signal correcting technology built in.  It will automatically switch to the strongest signal source and adjust for obstacles between your antenna and the broadcast source.

What is really cool is how this opens the door to some serious networking by using the Plug-n-Play USB ports already on your computer to simply plug in these devices, turning your computer into a wireless server, a source of video feeds (which can be transmitted via special wireless adapter to your TV or Media Center.)  You may be able to avoid high phone bills, cable/DSL bills and make your data highly portable and accessible in the process.

Depending on the service availability in your location, you may have several options.  What i did was set up a dry line, with only high-speed DSL service.  Then, I connected everything to that service.  It was a bare bones line, so it cost me about $30 a month after all the taxes and fees added on.

Then I connected my computer, my VOIP and had a payment for the VOIP of around $30 a month.  With those two hooked up I could stream TV and movies off the net free, I could make all my calls free (except for a low rate for overseas, etc.)   I had my own dedicated phone number, with voice mail, 3-way calling and the number follows me even when I left the state.  As long as i had a computer I could access my phone messages and voice mail and make calls.

Well, my next project is to cut that down even more.  I am going to be testing the MagicJack VOIP device shortly and I have read that the call quality is quite good.  The annual cost is only $20 and the first year is free.  The unit itself is very inexpensive and easy to set up.  Everything is on the device itself that is needed for setup.  You will receive a dedicated phone number of your choosing and you keep that number.  You can also keep your current number.

Once free WiFi is available where I live, I can turn off the DSL line and go straight wireless at Wireless G speeds (up to 56Mbps) or better.  For now I must pay for the DSL service, but soon that won’t be the case.  I will be prepared to take advantage of the free WiFi when it comes, and it will.  Keep in mind that Wireless N will give you up to 300Mbps, and that even the G protocol will provide the bandwidth to stream video.  Most WiFi servers are still Wireless G, so even if you have a Wireless N antenna, you will be limited to the WiFi Server you access.  The Wireless N devices will automatically step down or up as needed and are backwards compatible, so there is no need to worry about whether to get N or G.  Spend the extra and get the “N”, it’s that much better.

However, if yo are running Windows 98 or older operating system, you can only run wireless G, unless the manufacturer specifically declares that their Wireless N antenna will operate with Win 98.

I will share my experiences with you so you can get an idea of what can be done potentially for very little money.  I am after all, a total cheapskate when it comes to equipment.  I always seek the best for the least, and take advantage of any sensible means necessary to avoid paying full price.  Just do the math… what do you pay each year for your cable?  What if you could simply stop paying that, even if just 6 months out of the year?

By investing in certain equipment that works together as advertised, you can take control of the growing expenses you have for communications, and you will find that you have much more freedom of choice, and more money to spend than before.  It will cost you very little to capitalize on this technology and it will pay huge dividends over time.

My approach is simple… find out what works, then find the cheapest way to implement it properly.  The cost of something is much less relevant than the value of the funtion it serves.  And, not all products perform equally, though the protocol provides some minimum standards of performance.  So, you should always check reviews and research your hardware options.  You may discover why a particular item is so cheap… maybe it just doesn’t worked as claimed.  Or, maybe you can find what you need being liquidated to make room for the newest product.  Either way, we have a lot of choices and options.

I’ll try to help with my own input, but it’s up to you to do your own homework.  I can make suggestions, but everyone’s situation is different.  Generally, to take advantage of wireless you will need to connect to the net either through your own ISP, or through a nearby wireless router/server that is connected to the net and broadcasting with Free access… such as the Free WiFi offered in most McDonalds Restaurants and Starbucks Coffee houses all over the world.

The number of WiFi connections in the U.S. is expected to double by 2010, and if you look at a map of the WiFi connection available nationwide you can see that it’s time has come to break out.  Largely due to the advancements in wireless technology and the relative low-cost of computers and multi-functional phones.  You can now talk on the phone, watch TV, surf, make purchases, email and so much more all from your computer and phone, and you can easily synchronize all of your devices through Wireless and “Bluetooth” technology (which makes interconnection simple).

WiFi is the wave of the future, and there is no reason you can’t jump on board now.  The technology is still advancing rapidly, but it’s easily sufficient enough to be a reliable and clever way to save you money and increase your mobility and efficiency at the same time.

Of course I’m just superficially describing HHO, but there is plenty of information out there, you’ll spend days going through it all if you only explored.

Well, I have a treat for you… After spending a good deal of time researching HHO for use in my own motor design I call the ThermoTorque and HydroTorque motors, I felt like it’s time people be forced to face reality.
